One Simple Change to Instantly Improve Your WiFi at Home
If you're struggling with slow internet, laggy Zoom calls, or WiFi dropouts — you’re not alone. As someone who provides tech support across Melbourne’s inner-east, this is one of the most common issues I see. And often, the fix is easier than you’d think.
In fact, one of the quickest and most effective ways to improve your internet speed is by changing where your modem is located in your home.
🧠 Why Modem Placement Matters More Than You Think
Your modem (or router) sends out a wireless signal — just like a radio station. And like any signal, it's affected by walls, metal objects, and interference. If your modem is hidden in a cupboard, shoved behind your TV, or sitting on the floor in the far corner of the house, you’re unintentionally blocking its ability to reach your devices.
Here’s the truth: even the most expensive NBN plan won’t help much if your signal is being choked by poor placement.
✅ Where Should You Place Your Modem?
Here are a few expert tips I share with my clients around Prahran, Hawthorn, Camberwell, and surrounding suburbs:
1. Central Location is Key
Place your modem in the middle of your home — ideally close to the rooms where you use WiFi the most (like your home office or living room).
2. Keep It Off the Floor
Signals travel outward and downward. A modem on the ground wastes signal. Pop it on a shelf, table, or wall mount instead.
3. Avoid Obstructions
Microwaves, fridges, mirrors, and even water (like fish tanks!) can block or weaken WiFi signals. Try to keep the area around your modem clear.
4. Open Spaces Are Better
Don't trap your modem inside a cabinet or entertainment unit. It might look tidier, but it’s terrible for performance.
5. Use a WiFi Extender (if needed)
For large homes or ones with tricky layouts (looking at you, double-brick), I often recommend a WiFi extender or mesh system. I can help you install one if needed.
📍 Real Talk From a Local: Tech Support in Melbourne That Works
I’ve helped dozens of clients in South Yarra, Toorak, Malvern, and Glen Iris solve WiFi problems that had been frustrating them for months — just by adjusting their setup.
If you're sick of buffering, slow connections, or inconsistent WiFi throughout your house, don’t waste another afternoon on the phone with your provider. Sometimes it’s not the NBN — it’s just the setup.
